As a first-generation student, it was very hard to navigate when it came to college planning. However, Mrs. Bergen, college and career advisor, was able to smooth the whole process. Not only was Mrs. Bergen an amazing advisor she was a great influence and practically taught me how to walk and carve my dream into a reality. She is a person you can count on, a person who wants to live your dream with you, and a person who will do everything in her power to achieve what you as a student want. Baylor University was a dream and when I first met Mrs. Bergen. The very first step we did was look at our options (even though you have a dream school, it is never a bad idea to look at other great options) I fell in love with UCI and GCU and that didn’t mean I was abandoning my Baylor dream. I celebrated my ups and downs with Mrs. Bergen and to this day we still do. Mrs. Bergen is the best resource when it comes to college and career advisement and a great coach. I can say that with confidence as I am living my dream at Baylor University and achieving a bachelor's in Health Professions on the Pre-Med track and a minor in Leadership Development.

Throughout my time in high school, I couldn't have imagined a better mentor and advisor than Mrs. Bergen. Not only has she kept her doors open to those of us at LBHS, but she also has an adept ability to merge a student's passions and their future plans. Thanks to Mrs. Bergen and the CCA program, I fell in love with veterinary medicine and discovered a career pathway I wished to pursue in life. Currently, I am working a job I love thanks to inspiration from Mrs. Bergen and the CCA. That being said, Mrs. Bergen would make a phenomenal advisor.

For all my 4 years in high school, Mrs. Bergen was the most caring & helpful person ever. She had the best resources to help you. She always believed in her students and always wanted the best for them. I know my senior year was so stressful for me because I still didn’t know what I wanted to do but Mrs. Bergen made it easy and made me feel like there were so many options to do not just one. She made my college transition so much easier and without her and her resources, I would have been lost.

Ann Bergen is not only a mentor but a blessing in my life. She has been my backbone support system when I needed an extra door to open or when I needed to vent. Without her help, guidance, and support I would not have achieved what I have since I left San Juan Hills High School in June 2011. Ten years have passed and I am honored to be part of this. In my lifetime I have never envisioned myself in a graduate program, working for the fire service, and my newest objective of commissioning as an officer with the United States Army. I’m a prime example of all her hard work. I’m so thankful that Ann and I crossed paths. I wouldn’t have the life I have today otherwise.

Around the beginning of senior year, I was in a state of panic and completely terrified of college and my college plans. At that point I hadn’t applied anywhere, I hadn’t started any applications, I hadn’t made any plans for college aside from taking the SAT junior year. A friend of mine told me to email Mrs. Bergen, and I did. Mrs. Bergen, without asking questions, put me in a time slot. We met after school one day and spoke for a couple of hours. I left feeling amazing like the world wasn’t going to end, and with an actual plan for college. I had in my hand a folder of everything I needed in regards to standardized testing, community college matriculation, a complete list and pamphlets of 10+ four-year universities of interest ranging from safety to reach (a list which she sat helped me carefully compile), and a registered account with more than one college application system including the Common App. In the following months, Mrs. Bergen was always there. All I had to do was shoot her an email or walk into her office and she would without question or hesitation help me with whatever I needed; whether it was college advice, application/essay advice, or instruction on how to properly fill out and submit my college apps. She didn’t pick my college for me, or influence my final decision, or sit me down and write my essay for me, or take command of what should be my personal decision. I made every decision, wrote every essay, and settled on the university that I thought was a fit for me. What Mrs. Bergen did was give me the ability to make that choice by providing me with the information and advice to put me in a position where I could choose my college rather than panic. She did this by being there any day, any time, and being knowledgeable, competent, having experience, and knowing what colleges look for and how college applications work. Had it not been for Mrs. Bergen I would not be attending UC Santa Cruz now, and I would probably have had an excruciatingly difficult senior year. In hindsight the best college advice I got wasn’t Mrs. Bergen’s advice, it was from the friend who said, “Luka you should really stop by Mrs. Bergen’s office.”
